Ever since the policy of opening and reform was adopted in 1978, the tourism industry in China, thanks to the great importance attached by the governments at various levels, has become a new but a most dynamic and most potentially strong sector in China's tertiary industry. In many parts of the country, tourism has been regarded as a pillar, superior or priority industry in promoting local economic development. The position of tourism in the national economy continues to be enhanced and upgraded.
In 2002, China ranked the fifth in the world in terms of both overnight tourist arrivals and tourism receipts in foreign exchange. In 2003, China continued to rank the fifth in the world in terms of overnight tourist arrivals, but due to the impact of SARS, China ranked the seventh in terms of tourism receipts in foreign exchange. China's domestic tourism was among the. world's biggest, fastest-growing and most potentially strong markets; meanwhile, China's outbound tourism also saw steady development with each passing year. From 1996 to 2002, the total receipts of China's tourism has been growing by an annual average of 2-digit numbers for seven consecutive (连续的) years, which is far above the average GDP growth rate of the same period, and has thus become a new growth point in the national economy of the country.
The tourism development of China has improved the investment environment, intensified the opening to the outside world, and helped the growth of related industries. It has played an active role in increasing internal demand and employment, in enhancing the structural readjustment and inter-regional economic link, and in assisting people in the poor areas to get rid of poverty and live a better life. Moreover, it has greatly promoted the economic prosperity and social development of China and the friendly exchanges between the Chinese people and the peoples of the world.
We can learn from the passage that ______.
A the tourism industry in China has become an important sector in China's tertiary industry
B the tourism industry in China ranks number one in the world
C the tourism industry in China ranks the fifth in the world in 1978
D the tourism industry in China ranks the seventh in the world in 1978
In 2003, China ranked the seventh in terms of tourism receipts in foreign exchange because ______.
A China's tourism developed less quickly than other countries that year
B the bad influence of SARS
C China's economics was not good in 2003
D the Chinese people weren't interested in travel any more
By saying "China's outbound tourism also saw steady development with each passing year", the author means that ______.
A the number of Chinese who travel abroad is increasing
B China's tourism is developing steadily
C China's tourism has developed steadily
D the Chinese people like travelling
The word "intensified" (Line 2, Para. 3) most probably means " ______ ".
What is the best title of this passage?
A How does China's tourism develop?
B China's tourism has been growing by an annual average of 2-digit numbers for seven consecutive (连续的)years.
C China ranks the fifth in the world in terms of overnight tourist arrivals.
D China's Tourism Industry in Brief
Children exposed to smoke in their homes have more colds, flu (流感), and pneumonia (肺炎) and miss 7 million more school days than other kids, a major study shows.
Researchers from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, interviewed the parents of 17. 488 million children ages 1 to 10.
"Secondhand smoke exposure has never been studied in such a large number of children before. This is the first nationally representative sample," says David Mannino, CDC, Atlanta.
Based on their sample, representing 33.7 million children, Mannino and colleagues estimates (估计) 10.5 million (31.2%) are exposed to cigarette smoke in the home daily and another 2 million (5.8%) are exposed less often.
Results in the Journal Tobacco Control show that 10.5 million children are exposed to smoke every day.
"Miss 28 million school days, a third more than kids not exposed to smoke at home."
"Have 1.7 million more colds and acute respiratory infections (呼吸道感染), 10% more than unexposed kids. One infection can account for multiple days of illness."
"Have 102 million days of restricted activities, such as missing sports practice after school, 21% more than unexposed kids."
Rates also vary by income and education levels. 48% of children in homes with low levels are exposed vs. 25% in homes with high levels.
Says Mannino. "Children exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes simply spend more time sick. The best prevention is not to let smokers smoke in your house.\

Please accept our thanks for your quick response to our letter of April 15 regarding joint venture.
We wish to state that the amount of our investment will be around 3 million U. S. dollars, partly in the form of cash and partly in equipment. As to the project site, we agree with you because Shenzhen offers better conditions for shipment, transportation, communication and banking. This city will be especially suitable for exporting plastic after the factory in question is completed and starts production.
As joint venture involves complicated procedures, especially in the legal aspects, we should appreciate your furnishing us with more concrete details so as to enable us to proceed with the matter further.
If you think a face-to-face discussion will help clarify (陈清) and settle any question existing between us, we are prepared to send our Assistant Manager, Mr. Jones, and two experts to Shenzhen to call on you in person, so that problems can be settled on the spot, and agreement can be reached at an early date.
We await with keen interest your comments and sincerely hope that our proposed talk will yield fruitful results to our mutual advantage.
